    Hello,
First of all, I’m new and I’m pretty green at this wonderful sport of antiquing. I found this little guy in a thrift store and it caught my eye. I’m not sure if he is a “hobo” or “clown” or just to small for his cloths. I found something similar but the eyes were different and the pants were a yellow color. It almost looked like an updated version of this. Any help would be greatly appreciate. Cute little guy. Wonder if the mark on the bottom is incomplete & was meant to be JAPAN.

He is meant to be a little Dutch guy, like this big one from Volendam:

    Looks like it.

The colours of the clothes often vary on the ceramic ones.

I found this Dutch guy toothpick holder, but there's no context as it was an eBay listing that is long gone:

I assume you mean the pants.;) In Dutch they are nicknamed 'drollenvangers', turd catchers.

40s? 50s? Cute little chap from post-war Japan. Lots of this ilk were shipped, as salt and peppers, toothpick holders, ashtrays, whatever. They are rather delightful -- and though they are not uncommon they are becoming harder to find. Maybe a couple of dollars at a market or thrift store, if you are lucky ...

Looking at the other word, think I can guess that meaning is similar to AJ's, with less polite language.

    Yes.:muted:

I don't want to get technical, and KSW please look away... but I never understood how wide trousers like that could catch anything.

Maybe these could have a two way function?. I always assumes that farmers tied twine round their calves to prevent small furries and insects going up their trouser legs (didn't consider snakes:nailbiting:) but maybe the Dutch have other uses for them?.

These were only worn in a few small fishing villages, no farmers there, just fishermen. And no insects or snakes at sea.

Although these are called Dutch trousers abroad, we Dutch call them Volendammer trousers, after one of the fishing villages. Most Dutch men wore regular trousers (still do).

first of all, the Scheisser in this case is the person that wears these trousers. secondly, we use it for hiphoppers as well.
and the widest use is for little children.
and normal people have their poodles on the leash or in the cooking pot and not on their heads.
