Not sure what these are...

I got these from another dealer who was liquidating an estate with a lot of older silverplate, coin silver, and sterling items. I am drawing a blank as to their use. Approx 1-1/2” high by 1” wide. SM in cartouche mark, stamped twice 180 degrees from each punch. Bail has a partial mark, maybe “CE”? I picked them up in Indiana, if that is any help.
Anyone have an idea what these are?

Look kind of like thuribles (religious incense holders).

 

Maybe for a horse's harness? If you had a lot of them they would clink against each other.
I like the decoration, and it suggests that they hung fairly high so you would look at the bottom.

 

Do they open?

 

Way too small for thuribles.

 

They do not open as far as I can tell.
Nothing inside to rattle, so not a bell.
I was thinking maybe some kind of tassel end.

Also, polished one up a bit. They appear to be silver plate.

 

I really don't know. They are very small so maybe hangs from a necklace. I thought at first same as smallaxe thuribles or censers but if they don't open, ?.

 

i think they are acorn style/type ,lamp/curtain pulls

 

I'm still thinking the unscrew around the equator but are now corroded closed. The holes in the plain half make no sense to me is nothing goes inside. One of those things that will seem so obvious once someone correctly IDs the function.

 

Except for the English letters on the side they'd look Indian
