    Hi all

So this is the Oak chair i was referring to a few weeks ago when i joined this forum.
    Finally got some photos uploaded!
It has been passed down through 3 generations of my family but i really have little idea of it's age/period.
I have gone through literally thousands of google images etc but found it difficult to find anything which looks similar.

    Thanks in advance
    Mark

Variation of a fiddle back chair.

Until the experts show up, I'd guess between the world wars due to the over-all utilitarian design.

Have the legs been cut down? Seat appears to be very low to the floor.

Nice one. I'd say 19th century provincial piece (of an eclectic design). Looks like the Chippendale-inspired back and the carved armrests were meant to be a touch of class in an otherwise well made but simple chair. Looks comfortable (if paired with a nice cushion). The fact that it isn't worth thousands probably helped to keep it in the family.

Early nineteenth English oak provincial chair. Country made, as they say.

    Thanks guys.
So in a nutshell the chair is English but made in the French provincial style circa 1820?
I take it that since the chair is in a simple country style it would render it low in value then?

He's in the UK, could tell from the photos. Provincial here generally means made outside major cities or manufacturing sites, often refers to the North, South West or even one of the home nations.

Cumbria makes sense, it's very much in that local country style.

Solid 100+-year old English chair. Chairs in general are consistently disappointing in value. Due to the age and solid construction one might wish to overvalue this antique, but in my neck of the woods in the U.S. Midwest one might only get $50-$75 at auction. No fault of the chair, they're just by and large worth less than you'd hope.

It looks like it might have been the head chair of a dining room set.
