We got this piece in the store yesterday - the owner went and picked it up.
It stands about 5 1/2 feet tall. The seller said his grandfather had made the finish out of old records. I hadn't heard of this before but I found that it used to be fairly common for people to break up the old shellac 78s, add alcohol, heat up the mess, and end up with a real nice black shellac. I love the finish on this cabinet. It's nice and crackled.

Anyways, what I'd like to know is how old it is, what the style is called, whether it used to have feet and if so what type, and whether it's even standing right side up. Oh, we have the key.

Maybe it was on a stand that had feet?

Victorian is probably the best descriptor. Likely dated circa 1890. This would have had feet. Possibly free-standing on a base unit but most had rather short feet built in. I do think you have it right side up.

Have not heard of the record shellac thing either.

    Thanks all!

Brad - should I put feet on it? Or maybe some antique wood wheels? I looks odd and ill proportioned at this height.

If you could find some decent feet, I would. Even some simple bun feet, if not too big, would look better than nothing.

Exactly what I was going to say. :)
Easily available, easy to attach, will be stable and easier to scoot about. :)

There may be feet hiding under there.
It seems to me that, usually, such things never sit level without feet...or worse...having to shim them to be level and vertical. :p

I would put feet on it even if they were held back from the edges but they really should line up with the vertical elements to make them look more correct.

SIS - that looks pretty close.
I think I could manage bun feet. There are holes on the bottom on the bottom on the three corners.

    Hi Book,
Those holes might have been for small rollers. I have one where the bureau has 1" castors almost embedded into the bureau.

That shellac info is fascinating! Will you have to brew some more to cover up the new feet.

No thanks! I'll probably just paint them black.
The various directions seemed too involved for me.

They sound too small but I suppose it depends on the cabinet's weight empty.
Still, that could be quite a load on wooden wheels, which is what they should surely be at that age yes?
I realize they would also likely have been sitting on a wood floor not carpet.

And sounds just a wee bit dangerous... ;)

I'd say prime the feet, spray or brush paint them with gloss black then rough them up a bit and go over that with flat black then matte clear.
None of this to be done perfectly. :)
    Brushing with give more texture.

Nah! Paint them pink with plaid laces -- like sneakers.

    Ha!!!!!!

Not sure why this popped into my head with that idea but I saw this clownfart in the grocery store yesterday wearing a blindingly bright orange shirt and matching, I'll term them, 'shekeers'. ;)

I almost asked if he had just put fresh batteries in them... :p

They've had kid sneakers that lit up for years. I want a pair, but they don't come in my size. (gunboat)
