Hexagonal nuts (6 sides) and square nuts (4 sides) are familiar in this context, but octagonal nuts (8 sides) aren't. So my question is, when did octagonal nuts first appear? When did they become more or less common in the field of decorative items and such? I found this: https://sites.google.com/site/handtoolswa/articles/boltsandnuts which mentions the author being assured that some of the early 1800's steam engines used octagonal nuts.
Best read the machinist answers here, some of them did some serious research and I have awarded “likes” there accordingly. http://www.practicalmachinist.com/v...-wants-chrono-info-use-octagonal-nuts-347418/
Don't now if it can help, but I can state that all original helmet decorations , dating from before 1918, is held by square nuts.
