Odd clasp on brooch

Picked it up as it’s got an odd catch on the back. Any ideas why it’s designed like that?
Not tested but feel it’s pewter or similar. Thanks for looking

 

Shawl/scarf pin?

 

I’m thinking some sort of double finger trap?
I really have no idea!

 

Looks like to keep it closed it requires a pin to run through the holes on the side that opens, unless it snaps tightly into place. I can only picture it with scarf ends pinned down by the center & gathered in the 2 openings.

 

It snaps in quite firmly. I can see where you are going with a scarf clip although it has potential to damage the scarf with the centre bit.

 

Possibly for a feminine bolo tie. The cording used in those wouldn't be as prone to damage as a scarf would be and the center bit would keep the cords separated.

 

This looks very similar to a necklace enhancer. If so, this one would be for a double strand of pearls or beads. Does it look like it would fit around two beads and function correctly?
