Odd-shaped & carved chair from grandparents

Hello again my fellow Antiquers -

I inherited the chair shown in the photos below from my grandparents. It has a needlepoint seat and has suffered greatly from the hands of time and the paws of cats.

Its shape is unusual and the back surprisingly "blank" given all the design elements visible from the front. No markings of any kind to identify it.

From below the seat looks like it was partially made by the same process you'd make a barrel, so I've been calling it the laughing barrel-seat.

Finally, the tiny nails used to secure the needlepoint seat seem to indicate age.

Any knowledge you can pass along would be greatly appreciated!

Yes or North Wind face, popular in the Victorian era.
Guesses your chair is a victorian style version of a, Savonarola, Curule or X frame chair. Style has been around since ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, etc

    Yes, curule chair ca. 1900-1910.

The ones I've tried out are terribly uncomfortable.

But they look cool. Makes a heckuva cat bed though, just ask the cat.

The cat LOVES it! That's how the needlework started getting clawed up . . . then an inquisitive 3-yr-old had fun pulling the cording around the edges off . . .

Thank you all for your insights!

In that case I wouldn't bother re-covering it. Let the cat finish the job. (LOL) I have an old recliner that works very well as a scratching post and nap spot. Just ask the cat. We never bothered buying a new one and let a new cat finish tearing up the old one.
