This older oil painting is believed to have come from Europe but not exactly sure what the origin. I have had some people look at this signature and no id yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Same age. Vintage, not antique. Also appears to be German landscape (but could be elsewhere.) To my eye, signature reads W. Hof but could the "H" could be something else.

If you do an Google Image search for "vintage painting," "Germany," and "mountains," many of similar quality will come up. Here's just one as an example.

the stone covered roofs with additional stones to keep the stones in position are mainly used in the Valais and Ticino in Switzerland and the higher valleys in Tyrol.
the hayricks in the foreground are used as badweather protection for the kettle and men.

Again, more of a Swiss vibe than German. I agree, W. Hof.

I think this is a better class than the standard tourist-y landscape, but I do not know the artist.

Thanks. The quality looks great. Just didn't want to sell it for $100 and it end up at Sotheby's. :banghead:

it won't end up at Sotheby's. technicalwise and stylewise it's above the average; it looks as if the painter had some experience of the Alps; the color reminds of a full moon late evening just before dusk; the clean trail is very typical for Switzerland.
    probably 60s.
