    Happy Holidays! :D

I have recently purchased what I believe to be an old oil painting but yet to receive delivery, any help identifying anything regarding the painting would be greatly appreciated!

I have attached the photos I have and have the following information from the seller:

antique religious painting, nativity, on paper, stuck to stretched canvas
I'm no expert but this looks to be an oil painting on paper stuck down onto stretched canvas.
    very old.
    I cannot see a signature
    size is 27cm x 38cm

I have done some research online and hesitate to make the statement that it may be from the 19th century?....:hungover:

Apologies for the lack of information, but any (if any) help is greatly appreciated!!!

    George

That has a certain charm, doesn't it? But "...on paper stuck down onto stretched canvas" doesn't sound quite right. You'll have to let us know what you see when you receive. To my eye, looks 20th century but could be wrong. Not much to go on here to help with dating.

Looks like a painting over a print to me, could be 100yrs old though.

100 years old is yesterday. 1920. 20th century.

  8. As per request, images are now in full size.

Thanks for all the feedback already, much appreciated. To know that it is in fact "of age" is lovely to hear, I will be keen to update everyone once I have received it...then the real work can start :pompous:

We all get impatient when we purchase something. :) Can’t wait to learn about it. I love the illuminated quality of Baby Jesus.

Very likely a paint-enhanced print. Still could be 100 years old.

  11. I was just thinking the same when looking at the pictures :)

I've never seen paper stuck onto canvas before. My first impression was that someone took an older piece and highlighted it more recently. Those white daubs aren't really in the same hand as the original style of the image.

Just my two cents. My family was artistic and we painted on different mediums. We did crafts shows back in the 80s and 90s in Arkansas, US. So first let me say, I'm no expert but you mentioned painting oil on paper. That doesn't sounds right to me. Oil is just that it has oils in it and paper is fibrous and absorbs the oils so the 2 would not mix well unless someone found a way to coat the paper enough to keep the oil from absorbing. Acrylics would have a better chance with the paper but again the paper would still need to be sprayed with a clear coat or similar to keep paints from bleeding. I would think its possible to make this look old if you knew what you were doing. It is also possible that this is old as others have thought. Without taking to a professional to look at, it might be hard to tell. Someone with a trained eye should be able to spot the difference.

  16. Hi All, I received delivery of the painting today. From closer inspection, it certainly is hand painted (I can see all of the individual crush strokes across the entire painting) and it does in fact look as if it has been cut (potentially, or just pasted on) and pasted onto a canvas. There are signs of the paper in the right corner folded over, I have little knowledge but I am quite certain that paint doesn't do that. As for the age itself, I am still pretty unsure but it does look quite old. Is there any way for me to post a video on here? I could do a walk round and post it on here or in the gallery? I really am keen to find out more and the age! I have contacted a few antique stores locally to see if they can share any further information on it, potentially a valuation at the same time. Thanks in advance, George
