This is similar to your second painting:

"Theodore F. Wolff is an American Postwar & Contemporary artist who was born in 1926. Theodore F. Wolff's work has been offered at auction multiple times. Only one artwork sold; this was Portrait of an Old Man, which realized $12,800 USD at Julien's Auctions in 2020." oldman.jpg

I wouldn't recommend attempting to repair the torn area Yourself. It is best left to a professional restorer, however it can be a very costly & time-consuming procedure and so you need to weigh-up the pro's & cons in terms of eventual value after the work has been done. You could perhaps, use a self-adhesive/removable paper label upon the back of the canvas to prevent further damage.

Thanks, ritzyvintage I have learned from the past that in my case its best left to the professionals. I appreciate the suggestion you made use a self-adhesive/removable paper label upon the back of the canvas to prevent further damage. I think I could do that myself but for now Ithink I will just hang it on a wall somewhere out of the way.
    Thanks, Mervin

Thanks, wiscbirddog for that link to that auction. While that auction had my heart pounding, I also came across a few of his paintings that were passed on for a far lesser amount. I will contact Julien's today to try to get input from them. Does anyone have any suggestions about going that route?
    Thanks
