    Hello friends,

I do not own the painting, so unfortunately there is only this one photo. The description says it is unsigned and that the canvas looks old from the rear side.
I am pretty convinced that the mountain is Matterhorn, so the artist must be from Switzerland.
I am not an expert on art, but I am sure some of you are:pompous:
Please help identifying the style of this painting!
To me it looks like something late 19th century or early 20th:angelic:

Painterly, impressionism and so on - this is what I meant by "style".

hmmm... to be honest, this piece looks unfinished to me and as such, hard to know where it would have ended up.

If you Google "matterhorn paintings winklematten" you'll find similar view and maybe something to glean from those.

I'm not an art person at all, but I understand the desire to learn from something that interests me. After I get comments, I often realize that my suppositions are totally incorrect. But that is why we ask questions, isn't it. I don't have the language also to always express what I mean. @Jivvy knows her stuff, so perhaps it is unsigned because it wasn't finished.

You are quite kind, but I'd call myself a "determined student" at best. :)

I do live with a painter though and that helps. :cat:

Wouldn't hazard a guess as to age, but I would consider it an Impressionist work. You can take a look at the section entitled "Impressionist techniques" at the link below and see if you agree.

I would call it painterly in terms of style. I don't think it's as old as you think it is. It has a 1970s vibe to it (hard to say without seeing how the canvas is attached to the framing wood/stretchers etc.). It's a nice painting, but looks more like a practice piece to me, rather than a "finished" painting--even taking the deliberate painterly style into account.

Even if it is the Swiss Alps, don't think you can come to any conclusions about the nationality of the painter. Both amateur and professional artists have been known to go on trips specifically to paint/draw other places. I'd say it is impressionist in style, just not Impressionist in era.

Mr Jivvy, the painter in the house, thinks it is finished.

We disagree about many things. :p

In my opinion it's amateur. That's the style I would give it.
