Can anyone identify this artist? The date on this particular work appears to be 1937 or 39! (see photos!). Thank you!

 

That's a copy of Murillo's 'Dice Players.' Likely copied by the artist in the museum, as was common in the era. It's in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich so a Germanic surname not unexpected.

As a copy. That looks like a contemporary frame but the artist's hand looks 19th century. Are you sure re date? Have you tried to decipher signature? What does the back of the painting look like? Would you post a photograph of front and back including frame?

The signature looks like B. v. Wening, the v is a Dutch abbreviation of 'van'.
The name van Wening is a Dutch surname, originally.

The v is small, so a Dutch van. Wening is derived from an old Dutch word meaning 'friend'. So not German originally. The painter or his ancestors could have ended up in Germany, just like Ludwig van Beethoven's grandfather moved from Flanders to Germany.
