This to my untrained eye, looks older-course I'm so used to China made repros- who knows...but ? It's 6 3/8" by 2 1/8" high. Any ideas on age and name/region where it was produced ?
Thanks all for the great help-I know zero about Chinese !

Portuguese sprang straight into my mind too. I see quite a lot of it over this way. It tends to have writing on the base. Pinto a Mano and place names so maybe this an older less touristy piece.

All I was getting was not quite right hits for Tongzhi,Qing, etc. Thanks for the input re: the red clay,S. Europe & Portugal ! Now I've got a shot at finding exactly where this piece was made.

That exuberance looks more Italian to me.

I've never seen anything like it coming from Europe but not my area of knowledge. Portugal has had the closest ties to China but the motifs on Portuguese ceramics are tighter, more controlled and not in that colorway.

If it’s not Chinese it is a bang on copy of a Chinese style dish. I agree that the painting style doesn’t match for typical Chinese examples but the general theme is a very common Chinese one. Cocks around the outside, with a turquoise interior. There’s thousands of them. Google “chinese rooster bowl turquoise” and you’ll see a lot of them. I have one that’s better than many. Many of them have the red “China” or “Made in China” mark on the base. Late 19th into early 20th most of them. Not worth a whole lot because they are so common. Nice looking though.

Here is mine. Marked “China”. I wouldn’t bet against yours being a European copy but it does seem strange that it would be. Style wise those cocks do look done more in a European hand. 9DAAF5F1-4ED5-4777-8EB0-BC80849F7B6A.jpeg

It's a real riddle, and prob not worth much except in knowledge.
That's what grabbed me Dag-the fact there was no 'China' mark on the base, and the price.I'm always a sucker for a cheap bet !

If it was cheap it was worth grabbing! Should be a $20 bowl or so if you sell. The incomplete interior glaze doesn’t help otherwise a bit more maybe. People like roosters though. Who knows maybe a European made version would be more desirable.

It's that tin glaze -- the grey/whitishness (is that a word, LOL) -- that makes us think European. But the slap-dash quality is more southeast Asian. Ooh, my head hurts now!
