Old fork with strange inscription on it

    I'd speculate it's for measuring something.

    It looks like the maker may be the UK company Gieves Ltd (NS=nickel silver) and just a quick look seems like they did produce some military silverware so could be some sort of military reference numbers?

    This was my thought, institutional. That's a heck of a high number. Maybe first numerals are for a department/division.

    Hospital or prison, if British would have been more likely to have a royal cipher or the city crest, something like that. Military would have a broad arrow.

    I was thinking hold it upright in a sibstance? That the lines and numbers might be markers, if you see what I mean?

    Think I do. They're not 1s, they're graduation lines. Interesting that they get farther apart as the handle gets wider. Amazes me the 3 can be so close to the end that way.
