Old? Help with MAHJONG Set & Mystery Pieces

    Nifty looking mahjong set in a leather carrying case. Appears to be made of bone and bamboo. What are those long skinny pieces in the bottom tray? Any idea when this set was made? TIA!!

    These are also currently being made in China pre-aged

    I don't know the age, but do agree that the case looks like it has 'honest age' to it.

    Agreed. There is enough natural, honest age throughout this set that I have no doubt it is old or at least older

    The Great Mah-Jonng boom was in the 1920s when the US popularity of the game among non Chinese people took off. In general that is when these older and well made sets were imported and used.

    I see yours still has the circular 'Wind of the Round' indicators. Notice the way the tops of the tiles are dovetailed to the bamboo bases. Good quality.

    On the money, the black dots are units and the red dots, hundreds, as far as I can remember.
