Hi Luc and welcome.. That’s impressive.. Certainly looks like the ‘Thinker’ with a headache or hangover (stating the obvious :).. )More knowledgeable and helpful members will be along..

I think it's not after Rodin but didn't find any detailed pics of the Gates of Hell for comparison.
there were also Roman statues under the title "despair" that have the typical covering of the eyes.

'The Poet' from the 'Gates of Hell' has the same position of the arms as the statue we have come to know as 'The Thinker', so this is not a copy of 'The Poet'.
I did wonder if it could be based on a study for 'The Poet'.

Puts me in mind of Carpeaux's Ugolino & His Sons, but it's not. Does the figure have a face? Certainly a study in musculature.

If this is not a figure from history or literature, another allegorical figure it might be, in addition to Despair, is Sorrow, although I admit that's not getting me anywhere just now.

Google Image Search did a phenomenally bad job with the photo of the back.

Not exactly consoling! Would hate to come across that while going to put a wreath or flowers on a passed loved one's grave!

Thank you for your search. Before the artist make a marble sculpture they make a sketch/study or painting or a plaster sculpture, not ?

Yes, they don't just start chiseling away. Sometimes they model in clay or plaster. And when it comes to marble, the artist considered the author of the work is not always the person who does the chiseling.

    Fiddle-faddle, Fid!

Mock all you like, my friend, about sacramentals reflecting beings that have the same reality (in your opinion) as fictitious characters. It won't change my point that a sculpture that looks like he writhed off the pages of Dante's Inferno is off-putting and lacks sensibility in a place of perpetual rest.

Or maybe you'd prefer old gruesome there clawing at his noggin and clenching a fist in self-hatred/despair in front of your or a loved one's mausoleum or headstone?
