Hi, my friend got this painting at a flea market. It is very large, about 5 or 6 feet wide. Lots of crackling and crazing. Anybody recognize it?

Could/would you post a photograph of the back? No signature? Any labels, stickers or handwritten notations on the back? And where was the flea market?

I know nothing about it, but the details fascinate me. The cat on the little chair in the bottom corner. The goat (or lamb looking in the doorway. The painting in a painting that seems to be levitating away from the wall. The mother's legs that don't seem to be posistioned right or are missing altogether. the village in the distance outside the door.........The little girl in front looks pregnant herself. the chair seems kinda wonky too.

I have to think this is an amateur painting, at best an itinerant and untrained painter. My first impression was biedermeier, which is the period after the Napoleonic wars up to mid-19th century in Europe (particularly central Europe). This was when the middle class had gained enough stability and economic clout that they could indulge in things like painted portraits, largely from naive and itinerant painters, the well-trained academicians being still out of reach financially.

I don't know if it's sad. Maybe it's just meant to depict a prosperous family. But where's the father?

I don't have a photo of the back, but it appears that a painted canvas has been cut and mounted onto Masonite. Perhaps this is why there's no signature?

Every time i look at it I see something else wonky. The mothers hand looks like a lobster claw, and the Baby;s head is just WRONG, looks like it;s about to roll off onto the floor. Have to wonder if the baby has a pacifier in its mouth too.

Hum. There's something very odd about your painting. It just doesn't look as old as it purports to be. For instance, the faces' aren't done as one would expect from a period painting. What did the seller say?

I think you're right. The girl below the grandfather has a tear running down her face.

So what we were wondering is would the baby's mother be the girl who appears to be pregnant at 6 years old?

Now.....looking at the chair....I see a thick back leg.....so what is the light brown thing in front that looks like it has a dustpan shaped hole in it. It CAN'T be the front of the chair could it? It's interesting that everything outside the door looks well done and detailed (the tree and the village) yet the people are not well done. Makes me wonder if the artist wasn't a landscape artist and not a people artist.
And what's that ring around the tree?......Ok I'll stop. Bedtime. I just know this painting is gonna keep me awake tonight!

My guess at a little color correction and sharpening. Would be nice to get a better high res pic in natural light.
