I've been. Sitting on this for a while. I never quite figured out what it is or what it's made from. Onyx maybe?

With that very light caramel color I would never have guessed serpentine. Impressions get stuck in your head,I think serpentine-green automatically pops up !

There are a lot of similar small stone carvings coming out of China, often described as coming from neolithic Hongshan sites. Many are very nice, but the vast majority are, I believe, modern creations.

True. The last 20 years or so they have been churning out serpentine and even nephrite jade carvings. Some are replicas, but many are new shapes, supposedly based on Hongshan etc jades.
