It's hard to tell, since your pictures are not full image, but I noted red drips on the handles. This is not a good sign of quality in my mind, but reminiscent of a factory produced piece. Since you have it in front of you, please look at it carefully and see if they painted within the lines and the patterns make sense. Others will come along who can make more definitive statements, these are just my thoughts and what I look for in choosing a piece of Asian pottery.

Welcome, Daddysteve! My gut reaction to the style of the vase is "wants to be Japanese but may be a Chinese imitation, 20th century." It would be helpful to see the entire bottom of the piece in addition to the closeup you provided.

Appears to be Japanese Satsuma, with moriage decoration. The mark inside the base (posted upside down) says "left 5", which may indicate the vase was one of a set, meant to be displayed in a particular order.

Late production Kyoto earthenware, just pre-WW1, Japanese, thick bodied etc, but kinda cool too. ;)
