Oriental Painting on material ?

    I have come across this painting of workers in a rice field which is done on material of some sort its not a canvas as the threads are clearly woven again any help is appreciated I have a close up of a signature but cant make it out. P5090449.JPG P5090450.JPG

    I believe it's BATIK.

    It is a batik painting on cotton. Judging by the pattern of the sarong of the figure on the right, it is from Java, Indonesia.
    Batik is a technique of using wax to block colour, the cotton is submerged in different colour baths, every time more wax is added so certain areas won't be dyed. The cotton is crumpled to crack the wax, that is how they get the lines in the batik.
