    Hi folks!

I stumbled across this forum not so long ago and recently joined. Looks like a wonderful resource to learn a lot!

Anyhoo, I purchased this oriental piece a few weeks ago and to be honest, Chinese/Oriental stuff is not my strong point. This might be a reproduction piece but I just wanted to be sure. It's a rather large jar with lid, with a mark on the inside of the jar. Can anyone help in identifying it? Many thanks in advance!:D

size? Show entire underside please. I don't see any signs of age so far so it could be a modern item.

    Hi there!
Thanks for the response :) Here are a few more pictures indicating size as well as the underside. The numbers 35 are also under the piece. (Didn't notice that before!)

Thanks Komokwa! It is an eye catching piece. Several years ago I bought a mug in a somewhat similar design for $0.50 at a garage sale - long story short, I listed it on eBay for $5 and it shot up to over $400! (it was unmarked). I still have no idea what that was, so before listing this piece I thought I'd ask about it :)

Hmm. All I can tell you is there are some bats and lotus on there incorporated into the design. Need to find out what that spider-looking symbol means.

I think it's probably missing rattan handles.

It would be nice to have a close-up of the finial, can't tell what it is in any of the pictures.

The mark might be on gotheborg.com.

Thanks for the info. I don't know much about this type of item but it looks like a nice, decorative, average quality item you might find at Pier One or similar outlets. Maybe search EBay completed items to see what similar pieces are bringing.

Thanks Devilish! I've been looking at eBay and online, hoping to find one like mine, but no dice yet. So I guess it's known as a 'ginger jar?'

This is not a typical "ginger jar" shape. I would not call it one.

The mark on the bottom looks like a blurry stamp as opposed to a hand painted one, isn't that supposed to be a tell its newer ?

That does look very similar in its decoration. And it really is a ginger jar shape (as opposed to the OP's.) Even has a decent hand-painted mark on the bottom (again, as opposed to the OP's.)

I think what you have is a biscuit jar not a ginger jar

    Chinese Straits/Peranakan/Baba Nyonya.
In my opinion late 19th to early 20th C.
Stamps were used during that time. The problem with the stamps is when you have early marks, mostly Early Qing ones - Kangxi, Qianlong, Yongzheng...
They should be hand drawn. Late Qing imperial - Tongzhi, Guangxu should also be hand painted. The porcelain made for commercial use( not for the palace) during late 19th/early 20th can have stamped marks.
You can have spurious hand painted marks on later pieces but they are usually made to make people believe the piece is older than it is. Then, you have to have an expert to examine the way the mark is drawn and also look for all other signs for the period the piece is claimed to be - shape, foot, base, glaze, painting style, enamels used, age signs etc...

I believe the following is the same as yours. The pic on the website won't open to a good view of the item any longer; however, was able to find a full pic of it albeit small. This particular item is being called "19c Straits Chinese Porcelain Jar" with the description: an "enameled Kamcheng pot with rich blues and pinks." Whether a Kamcheng pot or not, I don't know. I can't tell for certain, but it may have the same knob/finial as yours. It seems to have similar side projections that are hard to see. Note how it has the same pink border as yours and if not the same very similar flowers in the decorations.

Here are other Chinese Straits/Peranakan items in similar patterns and color scheme. The the items in these 2 links have no real description other than Peranakan, but do note the pink borders and blue motif is similar to yours, Both were uploaded to Pinterest by the same person:

This page has a brief explanation of Chinese Straits/Peranakan porcelain. 2nd topic up from the bottom "Chinese Straits Porcelain."

Here are Google images of Kamcheng pots. Yours doesn't look as "potty" as these. I vote for Pat's idea of Biscuit jar.

Whoa.... found the Kamcheng pot with 5 pics and description. It doesn't seem to have any marks, inside or out.

Do note just above "Details" the seller says "More than 10 available." Now if he has 10 more, then this certainly isn't an antique, strictly a reproduction. At first I thought the 10 meant 10 pics, but there are only 5 pics.

    BTW, that's a foo dog/lion knob/finial.
