Hi folks, picked these up at local(9) auction yesterday.

    hand painted tavern/bavarian scenes

back of the tile states BOCH FRES

think these are hand painted blanks though, there is some writing towards bottom under frame, think titles

heavy and large, tiles 8 inch squared

    any thoughts or info appreciated

Perhaps a budding tile artist could purchase these as 'blanks',paint them and get them fired at a local kiln ?

So let's see... Boch Frères started in 1848 and the name changes to Boch Frères S.A. in 1948. That's a rather big window. But I'd think turn-ish of 20th century.

Says Boch Fre's on the tile. An abbreviation of freres. Bit like Bro's. When will I be famous?

I think the artist was German. Morgen and mir. Morning and me in German. Can't see the middle word.

thanks Inh, think i'm gonna have to open them up (as annoying as it is) as there might be signatures underneath

iv'e seen a few artist signed/recognized oils in the same vein so hoping there might be a connection

Think German or Austria origin right. Those are little amusing quotes; pity they can't be read fully. I assume they're about women's work and men's play. On one tile, she's already deep in her household duties (the laundry) and it's only morning. On the other tile, she's worn out and fallen asleep while performing another (knitting baby clothes.) At least, that's what I see.
