    Hi folks

can anyone help with this painted box i picked up yesterday. Came in a small tin box lot

    https://www.easyliveauction.com/cat...8a6646f/homewares-and-interiors-sale-lot-648/

image search brings up quite a few similar, but can never really trust google 100% ;)

i find the paintwork quite sloppy, but does have a particular charm to it

i'm thinking papier-mache by a few exposed areas, but not sure

also thinking the cream/yellow (inside/base colour)might be overpaint

any help on age, use and origin would be super

    any thoughts appreciated

Continental European folk art. Possibly northern European.

Interesting, thanks Aj, image search was indicating something totally different, which was why i asked

they are being described as mid 19th century,is that a possibility or do you think later

    What did it say?
I think it could be later as well but folk art can be difficult to date.

Has some charm. A few examples I saw said Russian with some
referencing paper-mache. Personally I would have never thought as old as mid 19th century (but I see some being described as such)

the general consensus seems to be victorian english or french document boxes, most with very wild prices, which are way over priced, so to be ignored ;)

not exactly the same, but seem similar

    For very small documents?:D
Very different to my eye. The difference is that those aren't folk art, but made by professional painters, which is why they are much better quality.
The ebay one is penwork, btw, a technique which you won't see in folk art.

Folk artists were generally farmers etc who made crafts and painted items as a sideline.

Some find 'Folk Art' funky, some find it priceless.AJ nail's the diff btw Pro & Folk.
Ditto Charlie-The Fish Tins awesome ! Do you find tons of old tins in the UK,they're getting fairly hard to find here, esp 19th century.

Folk Art's all a matter of taste-or posh Connoisseur Opinion (!). Way above my pay grade. I been studying Art for years and I think I've got a decent knowledge of what to buy or not,but I'm no 'Fake or Fortune' level guy.
PS-By the way,we went to the Courthold Gallery while in London (where the Show gets their pieces restored). It's the smallest place with the most masterpieces I've ever been-truly amazing !

interesting, i guess the flowers on it at one time could have been fuller like the barge ware ones, may have have just faded/worn a bit

I put the last coat of shellac on it today, I won't lie, I'm never doing another Khatam box again, it's been weeks of work and many things I've never done before. Hopefully I'll do a post very soon BTW from then to now there's a big difference :)

It just reminded me of barge ware, I'm not saying it is but barge ware has a look to it and this has the same look.
