We found what appears to be a painting of a woman ( I say appears to be because you can see brush strokes) on our last Galveston, Tx trip DSC07330.JPG . On the back is written 'Old Wood' but it doesn't feel like wood. Feels more like a heavy cardboard. The size is approximately 9" x 11". I can try for a better photo if necessary.

A photograph of the back would be helpful.

What should I possibly used for a title?

"Old Wood" appears to have been a framer's reference/notes.

Looks like a print to me. The surface texturing doesn't seem to have anything to do with the application of color.

Have you done an internet image search to see if you can match it? As above, does appear to be a copy.

Definitely a print of some kind.

Thanks, any ideas for what search terms I'd use?

You can drop in the image and the internet will search to match it. Go to GOOGLE Images.

You can search for "Southern Belle" by Erich Correns (the artist).

My grandmother had an "old" print of that painting. It was apparently quite popular many years ago (and may remain popular in some quarters). ;)

I wonder why, with all the portraits of mid-19th century women, this one in particular 'caught on'.

I like that sort of question. Almost unanswerable without a lot of research, though!

Thanks everyone, I had no idea you could search that way with Google. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

(I've had too many Cape Cods at this point to answer with anything less than crass snarkiness).

Pretty girl in a pretty dress. I think the answer is obvious - she's decorative and she doesn't talk back. For some guys, that's the idea.(LOL)
