A few of my books that I have inherited. And again pardon the dust. I had not seen it until resizing pic. Just being real. First editions Moore's Lalla Rookh and The Nile Boat, Lady's Book 1857 among others. Any guess on values. Beautiful illustrations. 20190510_145211.jpg

    Hello,

To say something specific on the value, you would have to show more pictures of the books, title pages, illustrations, condition (complete, binding, cover, for the newer ones dust jacket....)
You can try if you find your books on pages like abebooks, vialibri etc (dealers prices) or ebay sold items. Most books from the 1800s are not worth more than brand new books.

    Pre-ban is pre-1947.:nailbiting:
The Persian miniatures sold as ivory are usually painted on camel bone, a Persian material, that's why I asked.:)

Without seeing clear detail, I'd say it is camel bone. It doesn't have the even ivory lines, and you'd need a giant tusk to get that width in ivory.;)
So your grandfather is in the clear.:)

Someone looked at it during probate and said he believed it was ivory. He was from Alex Brown Auctioneers. Valued as ?? and illegal to sell out of state.

If he had it in hand and didn't know for sure if it was ivory, he doesn't know much about ivory. Or about Persian miniatures, for that matter.
Yes, it would. Ivory usually wouldn't.
Camel bone is a beautiful material, the most beautiful type of bone imo.

    Beautiful in any case.

I saw the dust, but only after you pointed it out.

Nice still life composition with the books and ivory. A handsome avatar, methinks.

McAdder was right re: value. Given the odds, I doubt you'll be able to retire on selling those books, but they're so attractive you might as well keep them anyway.
