Featured Perfume(?) bottle with hinged cap - what do hallmarks mean?

A friend of mine who manages a thrift store gave me a box of nik naks including this bottle. I think it was a perfume bottle except the hinged cap has English hallmarks on it.
1 is a left facing lion that when I looked it up said it is a silver mark; is the top silver?!
What do the other marks mean? Was it a perfume bottle & how old is it?
    Thank you for any information!

British hallmark for sterling silver, date letter looks like it's for 1896

Yes was likely in a dressing box with other sterling and cut glass or crystal cologne/perfume and powder jars. The mark is sterling, London and it is hard to tell the date code but looks like 1896. If you polish it, you might find the manufacturer hallmarks that look like they might be on the upper left of that hallmark.

Perfume bottles are not my field of expertise, but isn't it missing a small glass stopper?

Yes, could be. Sometimes they have tight fitting corks, or sprung loaded cap inners which negate use of a stopper, so depends what's inside the lid. Could also be for smelling salts if the opening is broad and the seal is in the cap.

    I agree wholeheartedly!! :D:D

If the "spider web bottles" are the ones I think you are describing they can be anywhere from extremely old to fairly recent.:happy:

@komokwa & others are always saying they don't see enough blades. ;):hilarious::hilarious:

God knows this group lives to see all kinds of "this & thats!":smuggrin::smuggrin:

Your bottle in the metal case held a perfume made by Coty obviously. They are referred to as "arched cases" & were meant to be used when traveling or on the go tucked into your purse.

They also came in different colored metals & the color of the case would correlate with the perfume it held. The plain silver one held a variety of different scents. The bottle would have originally had a small gold sticker on the side to let you know which fragrance it contained.

Here are some sold examples from eBay.

I can't quite make out the bottom of your other one but it looks like the fairly recent ones out of Mexico.

There is a wide variety of the silver overlay bottles such as the ones shown below.
