Has anyone ever seen pewter that looks like silver? I have such a piece. Why is that, anyone have a technical explanation? It sounds obviously like a yes answer, but is it because it has so much silver content? Then such items would be much more valuable than most plated silverware.... are these items uncommon?

Someone has simply kept it over-polished. Probably with Brasso or similar. There is NO silver content in pewter.

Why is you pic labelled "Japanesepewter." It's clearly not Japanese with all that European marking.

That was my first impression of it. What is that Japanese style of European antiques in the 19th century, Japonesque or something?

That would be right, but this is a 20th century piece, given the markings, so it is certainly not of the period for Japonisme style.

marks look modern made-up or eventually étain de rose. there were mixtures with a tiny amount of silver added to pewter without any effect. the best effect was with added antimony, mostly known as Britannia metal.

the Oscar is Britannia as well.

Thanks for replies. I'm not finding a good reference on what you mean by étain de rose.

étain de la rose/ étain du roi etc. were all brands in the 1950s and later in France that worked after older examples.
the names tried to give the products a certain flair of royalty.

P.S.: the 95% mark gives it away as 1970s and later.
