This ring arrived in a big box of costume jewellery that I bought as I wanted one necklace. As you do.
Along with everything else it was filthy but I thought I could see a mark on it. Scrubbed it and it says PLAT .
I know you can’t tell from a photo but before I make a fool of myself and trot into a jewellers, is this even likely to be platinum as there isn’t a proper hallmark?. Google is somewhat sketchy!
    Thankyou :)

Thankyou. I'll get it checked. Just didn't want to get laughed straight out of the jewellers!

I've seen some old Mexican silver with that mark too, but not marked Plat by itself.

Why would they laugh at you,it could have been brought into the country by a visitor, there are many pieces of jewelry with a metal content mark and no maker's mark. It is strange that the inside edge has been "rolled" in a number of places.

Just because it doesn't have a hallmark. I don't know much about platinum. I'll have a closer look at the edges.

The 2 on the left only have a sterling mark, the one on the right has no marks.Over the years there has been probably hundreds of thousands pendants, rings, etc. without a maker's mark from various jewelry findings suppliers. https://www.antiquers.com/threads/3-pendants.38643/

It should feel unexpectedly heavy, platinum is denser than pure gold. If you weigh it agains a similar sized silver ring it should weigh twice as much, or about the same weight as a 22 carat wedding ring, this will prove it is not silver.
The design is pretty much what I would expect.

Thankyou. That's very helpful. I have put it against my grandmothers known platinum wedding band and they are very similar in appearance and size. I will weigh them as I didn't think about that. It would be wonderful if it is as then I would have two and two little girls to pass them on to :)

If weighs heavier than my old ring so I’m presuming that’s a positive:)

Mark on old ring. There’s a mark at the end but it won’t show.

When I was sorting through the box I was a little disappointed that the necklace I bought the job lot for wasn't quite what I expected but this more than makes up for it!. I must be on someone's good list :smug:

I love those kinds of mistakes, as long as it's someone else making them!

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Congratulations on the find, @KSW ! I have a platinum ring that was new about 15-20 years ago. It does also say PLAT (not spelled out), along with other marks.
