My father had this violin in the attic when we cleaned the house out. We know there's alot of replicas but of course are hoping this one is real. We can't get a good pic of the tag inside but here's what it says: "Antonius Stradiuarius Cremonenifis Faciebat Anno 1736"
Sorry about the doubled pics, couldn't figure how to get rid of them!

    Any ideas? 000_9471.jpg 000_9472.jpg 000_9473.jpg 000_9474.jpg 000_9482.jpg 000_9484.jpg 000_9485.jpg 000_9471.jpg 000_9472.jpg 000_9473.jpg 000_9474.jpg 000_9482.jpg 000_9484.jpg 000_9485.jpg IMG_4512.JPG

I do know that most(a ton) of the "Antonius Stradiuarius" copies were made in Germany - late 19th/ early 20th century. Don't know enough to say for sure where yours is from.

Well that may be a start - I remember my dad told me he was playing it as a kid - he's 96, and told me to get it out of his attic in the house we are cleaning out - that's all I know - copies ?

An option for you..... @Rayo56, they'll do an appraisal! But the article does say most or all of the real Strads are accounted for too!! So unless it was pretty reasonable.............?

The scroll on the neck looks mechanically carved; I wouldn't worry about this being the real deal.

The lacquer looks iffy too. The Cremona violin makers were very meticulous in developing and applying their lacquers, as they influenced the sound.

This may have been new or close to it when he got it. I would however give that bow, i.e. the "stick" a good going over. Sometimes those are worth more than the violin is!

Really, you need to take it to a reputable violin shop. Even an expert - and I'm not - can't tell much from online photos. For sure it is not a Stradivarius, but only a good shop can tell you if it is worth $200 or $2,000, needs a lot of work, or can be sold as-is. There is a directory of ethical shops at http://www.afvbm.org/
(They also have an article on why your violin is unlikely to be a genuine Strad)
