I have recently acquired this piece and can't identify it online. I paint furniture but never antiques and I'd hate to ruin this piece if it is an antique. It is in pretty good shape except for the back where someone stapled the back on which had buckled.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated starting with what type of wood it is.

I think probably 1940s. Looks to have a mahogany finish but the wood may not be mahogany.

Thank you so much! How do I determine if the wood is mahogany? The finish is faded in several small places but I can't determine a grain pattern.

Also, do you think it would be a horrible affront if I were to paint it as opposed to just cleaning it up well?

If you like painted or it sells, paint away.

A good pic of the wood on the sides or top may help me to determine wood. I wouldn't paint this myself since it appears to be in pretty good condition. However, I am sure it would probably sell better painted these days. It is not a fine antique, nor likely ever to be one. Paint away if it so moves you to do so.
