Hello, everyone. This wood armchair was purchased by my in laws from a Los Angeles area antique store in the 1980s. It’s a little workhorse of a chair (not babied at all), and is very sturdy for its size. The arms themselves are just over 12” long, and the chair back is 16” across. The wood has a wonderful grain (oak?) and the wood is very, very smooth. I have many vintage and antique chairs, and this wood is the smoothest.

It has a drop-in seat with new upholstery. The slats are vertical. There are wooden pins or dowels fastening the chair together. When you take out the drop in seat and look into the chairs, you can see old screws. There is no visible hardware when you flip the chair upside down. There are what look to be replacement modern screws put in where the arms meet the frame, for support. The arms have an interesting bend in them.

I haven’t seen any other chair like this, so I can’t trace it to any particular country or era. I’m turning to my fellow Antiquers for assistance!

    I apologize for the sideways orientation. I took the photos the correct way, and they are upright on my photo library. 88175E3F-BEE5-4FF6-BEAC-EB8A19A6BF85.jpeg 69843332-CF76-424A-B5F6-889446201276.jpeg 084BFFE0-1E8B-4B0B-9183-A2BD3DD9E31D.jpeg 64D2EE0C-CB9A-497D-A80A-FB69769640CF.jpeg 7027E241-E285-4511-AC5E-0AF67372365D.jpeg F2F7ED98-9D02-46A4-8245-8D8F662EB854.jpeg F2F7ED98-9D02-46A4-8245-8D8F662EB854.jpeg FC90B681-7A0D-4BC5-860B-6B9DF8E68E12.jpeg 49F5DC52-3E37-4C0D-832F-486A6BB73DEA.jpeg 576EAB5B-0380-44AA-AC10-FB0B83990CE4.jpeg A8A139FB-D36D-4627-9371-0BE21AC807AE.jpeg

Here are some more photos. One shows the screw holding the arm to the frame. There is also a circle cut out in the frame.

The first photo is of the seat frame. The edge has what I would call a double bevel to it.

I have included another photo of what looks to be a wood pin holding the frame together.

I'll be interested in seeing what others have to say. It seems to me there's a lot of mid-century in there. My guess is 1960s, maybe into the early '70s.

Here, it would be pre WW2. Lovely oak.

That's better. Might even be earlier than I thought.

Thank you, all. Whoever made it did a wonderful job. It’s not very big but it’s easy to fit in, and is super-comfortable and sturdy. The construction techniques seemed a little unusual to me, whether it’s the visible pins or the lack of any visible screws etc when it’s turned upside down.

Plus, I haven’t seen any other similarly shaped vertical back splats like this one (obviously Windsor or Hitchcock chairs are totally different, with spindles).

    Hi,
Your thought of "pins" just might be where someone has covered the screws with either a wooden pin dor just wood putty. If it is putty to 'Hide" the screws they forgot to cover. I posted they this morning but forgot to post.
