Featured Please help with age and type of stone

Good afternoon!! I've had this for probably 30 years and have always wondered what type of stone it is. I can't picture it but certain ways it catches the light it seems to have a crack or flaw. ? can stones crack or glass??
The setting is jeweler tested at 18 with 22 kt wash on top. Pearls are real!

If the setting is that quality, it is probably not glass. Stone is dark in photos, but looks like citrine. Most citrines like this are heat treated amethyst.

Both stone & glass can crack.

I agree. And it is a gorgeous brooch.
It is difficult to see the exact colour of the stone in the photos, but a darker citrine is certainly a possibility. Would you say it is a cognac colour?

Does it have ANY red in it? Are you sure it's not just a low quality (orange-brown) garnet cut to a nice large size? If you can better show the color on white background in the light, I could possibly vote for Bronwen's possible citrine too.. ??

 

It looks very old, but I am not a jewelry person, someone else who is will surely know the age more accurately. Please someone joolz weigh in?

Without having the stone tested you can not be sure. I'm surprised the jeweler who looked at it for you didn't check the stone!

Marie, I believe garnets to be rather soft, are citrines just as soft?
For some reason, I thought citrines were harder stones..

 

Garnets are as hard or harder than citrine, which is a quartz.

 

Give up until it is tested.I have Dravite,Hessonite,Mexican Topaz and smokey quartz which match the color in the photos.

 

When it comes to identify (from pics only) stones mounted in jewellery, I go too from the clues given by the era (style, construction, findings...).
Then probability of the stone is of the most commonly used varieties is... Big! (When oruginal to the piece, of course!)
Citrine and garnet are the most probable candidates for me

 

The length of the pin past the hook and the thickness of the pin would probably make it early 20th century as Browen stated. Wery pretty. I can see it pinned to a high neck collar.
