    Hello :)

I was peering inside this big bulk lot that I bought,
and I was particularly attracted from this old vase.
I have no experience of vases, so I entrust myself to you for proper identification and dating.
A particularity: I do not know if it's just my feeling, but I seem to see a face under the base.
But maybe it's like when you look at the clouds and imagine a shape you know.

    height 15 cm

    width 17 cm

I send you the related photos.
    20 + 20 I divide them into two messages.
Thank you all for your help

Old or made to look old? Strange that inside is so pristine, and fragile-looking black stuff mostly still on bottom, I’d think it would have all crumbled off if the thing had been used much. But I know almost nothing about pottery.

I think I remember a thread on a pot that was fire burned. Does anyone else remember that?
Ok it was called pignatta pottery. Doesn’t seem to have been decorated.

Sorry, but assuming that it was burned in a fire or similarly in another context, then even painting would have to suffer more burns.
Honestly, it does not seem to me burnt.

Yes I found that one. Doesn’t look like yours. Maybe @Taupou or @2manybooks is familiar with this.

It's an ancient alien pot with stars and an arrow pointing toward the home world.

Thank you for your answer, which suggested me a consideration: I do not want to say nonsense, because I am not competent, however, this pattern, these drawings remind me of the Aztecs, their astronomy, their symbols, the snaking steps, etc. .

It is not a type I am familiar with. The general shape, and the marks visible on the inside, seem to indicate that it was wheel thrown. The designs look like an attempt to appear "native", and it looks like the colors were painted on rather than applied as a glaze or slip. Perhaps just a commercial decorative item.

Modern and made to appear NA in design. Could be from Mexico but just as likely Indonesia. Very similar in form, execution, and clay to some Lombok pottery even if the motif is different.

Can you give me please technical explanation about " Modern and made to appear NA in design"
Just to learn from your expertise.
    Thanks a lot

Thanks, it seems to me that pattern is different, it's an Atzec style, you see the snake steps, and also other elements. So, i was thinking of Mexico too, you're right.... Maybe a modern vase treated to appear an Antique Atzec vase ?

There is symbolism, and I can see your interpretation of the imagery.
But it is not Aztec in style, besides, it is wheel turned, which rules out anything pre-Columbian.
It is an intriguing pot, probably inspired by something older.
There seems to be sun symbolism, snake or lightning, an arrow. And random dots, celestial?

Maybe inspired by ancient European designs?
I don't see Southeast Asian in this. Maybe Southeast Europe, based on ancient symbolism.
A Bulgarian potter having a field day? Slavic artists love symbolism, all to do with confirming Slavic identity ever since the late 19th century.
A Sardinian potter having a field day? Archeology and identity are very important on Sardinia.

Gianluca, this is all speculative, but maybe it sets something in motion.

For some celestial inspiration, the Nebra Sky Disc, ca 1600 BC, Germany:

Many thanks for your reply :)

Do you also seem to see a face with a turban under the base ?

No, sorry. When I look at the base the whole base looks like a sun, with those triangles around it.

okay, but you did not consider the hidden spirit in the vase, the secret evanescent soul of a historical object that could be alive.
    Joking :-P

    Thanks for everything :)
