A university sent these pictures and wanted this cannon identified. I’m pretty sure it came from a particular mountainous country, but don’t want to insert a bias now. Please tell me the language/origin indicated by the red text. They gave me no dimensions but I’m guessing the cannon is 4 feet long or maybe a bit more.

When I stand on my head, I can clearly read "field artillery" so language must be is English.

How embarrassing, ‘tis English. One part I think says “to promote the traditions of US Field Artillery.” But not a US piece.

I determined that the cannon is Nepalese. Further info from the U is that it has a 3” bore sleeved with steel inside. It is about 37” long.

Odd to see 1' tiles today. At least that appear fairly new, so 4' is a good estimate.

Interesting, spring. What makes it Nepalese, or is that too complicated to answer?

A New Jersey militaria dealer bought all the old Nepalese Artillery about 8 years ago and has been selling off those hundreds of items since then. I inspected the first 130 items to come over and this is typical of those. The workmanship is poorer than similar European bronze cannons- note for example the saw and file marks on the trunnions-never seen on European items. The Nepal pieces are usually unmarked like this one. No doubt really, but you have to be familiar with that NJ collection to be as certain as I am.

I'm trying to think when the last time was that someone would have been banging away in Nepal. I can't see the Gurkhas(sp) hauling one of these with them to go fight with the British Army.
