A friend of mine in CA has this item and she is trying to determine exactly what you call it. I had never seen anything like it. It's a bowl with a half lid but all one piece. 10" diameter. Bowl section is 3" high. Overall height is 7". Not my pictures. [IMG]

It probably had a silver plated half lid that swiveled, probably to keep food warm.

That sounds feasible but wouldn't there be some wear on the porcelain half from the metal piece from swiveling?

My guess is that it is English.
The English do some weird things;):)
    Where's @Ownedbybear?

Wonder if it is for a specialty food dish?

    Biscuits? Bread?

    Hi,
Pancake servers had a completely covered top with a vent hole. Have a couple of them around here somewhere.

It didn't have a separate metal cover, or there would be holes for it.

Seen those described as muffin or crumpet dishes.

Just to clarify: you wrapped the muffins in a napkin.
