I saw this post today on eBay, where seller questions whether possibly Limoges or Sevres. If something isn’t marked, how would you know? I realize many members would “just know” through many years of expertise, so I guess my question really is, are there legitimate pieces out there which aren’t marked? There you have it, my complete ignorance, bared for all to see

In this case, you can find other objects with the Buisson signature that have a mark. So you make a tiny leap of faith. No, it doesn't help that so much is unmarked. Some people can make an educated guess, but I'm not one of them.

Sometimes great pieces are unmarked. Porcelain decorators often worked on piece work rates and saving a minute on not painting the mark could earn them money or help them to hit targets set by their bosses. I’ve seen a lot of perfectly good Charlotte Rhead for example with no signature.

I am by no means an expert on Sevres or even Limoges. I would love to get Sevres someday. I note the seller states that the vase is handpainted, which it is along the golden Chinoiserie Scrolls over the blue.

However i am not sure if it is the quality of the picture or not but the character in the picture appears to be printed. So not sure if this old or not. It screams printed to me.

I couldn’t see the listing before but my feeling is that the figure is printed. The gilding quality is not up to Sevres or most Limoges factories.

I'm always VERY hesitant to attribute something to either Limoges or Sevres without at least a signature. On the off chance it was Limoges it was most likely a blank decorated by another company.
