I picked up this unmarked stein at Friday's auction. It is 5 3/8" to the side edge.
So what does everyone think, old vs. new?
Was this type item made anywhere besides Japan?

Would those rim projections hurt your lips? I don't see old and I'm unsure about Japan.

I don't recall having seen a recent piece decorated with this technique, which is labor-intensive and requires quite some skill. There's also so much of the old stuff still around at reasonable prices it doesn't seem a good candidate for a reproduction.
