    I think it's a Japanese wood hibachi.

    Size?

It actually looks a lot like something my mother has in her living room. Hers was converted into a small table, though. And in the top of hers there is a pane of glass that was added later so the inside could be used for a display. The pattern of drawers around the edges of yours does remind me of hers.

I will ask her what hers was originally.

    It is a hibachi.
I knew it was something along those lines. Does anyone know the wood that's used? I see it from time to time on Japanese pieces.

I really love this. There was one at an auction I attended last year and I really considered buying it but I didn't.

I don't know the wood but in looking around a bit I found somewhere mentioning several types of wood sometimes used in Edo-Sashimono (not saying that's what your's is but it's where I was reading:)) anyway they listed cypress, paulownia, mulberry and zelkova woods. Of those maybe mulberry and zelkova might be possiblities.

Of course it might not be any of those but someone else might know.
