The information you want appears to be written on the back. Mainz is a city in Germany so "German school" most probable. Unfortunately, the signature W.K. doesn't give one much to go on as to artist. But the initial K. reinforces the probability that your painting is German as "k" is a letter not found in the Italian alphabet.

The name of the sitter also appears to be written on the back. I can't read it. Would you post a close-up photograph or tell us what it says? And the stencil too please.

Thank you, Bronwen. Thought it read "Elisabeth" and a surname. Time to fill that prescription.

    Benach is an uncommon surname.

    Thanks a lot, Debora!

The back of painting shows: Eigenth.v.Pn.Hr.Benack

As I live in Germany, I could find out that this painting belonged to a businessman of 19th century Heinrich Philipp Benack, who got queit a collection of paintings and even sold some to Frankfurt am Main museum back than. But I have no idea about painter of this painting.

Except of monogramm W.K threre is something carved in the wood of frame. I hoped, maybe someone recognize the style or something.

Thank you very much for your help!

Are you sure of your provenance? How do you know it belonged to Heinrich Philipp Benack? What does the stencil say? Are you near Frankfurt? And what do you mean by "recognize style?"

The Chinese one appears to be a copy of yours. Wonder how the one you have became well enough known to spawn such copies.

Her cross is quite interesting. On quite a long chain with an embellishment. Perhaps one of the "joolies" can take a look?

Could be. I did a Google Image search but nothing came up. But that could be where "Italian School" came from.

If the stencil says Pintothek Mainz, may be the copy of a work from their collection.

As I bought it, I thought first it is a failure in the painting, but as I looked with a spyglass, it was a white color, so it was painted in purpose. I dont know why, though.
