Pottery Majolica? Vase Pot Painted Parrots

Not sure if Majolica is the type of pottery.
Don't know if it was originally a vase or some type of pot that was turned into a lamp or something else or that hole was always there.
Any thoughts on origin, age etc..?

I think hobbyist painted.

 

Like the whole piece is hobbyist or just the painting? The decoration is underglazed.

It looks like the hole was drilled later, since a lot of the glaze is missing. It reminds me of a nice vase that someone has "tarted" up. I do like the design that they used.

I am not sure anymore if the decoration is underglazed. The white/tan ground is the same as the one on the interior. The painted images are smooth and glossy but there are few places where you can see small chips on the paint.
So maybe the paint was applied over the original glaze and then the piece was fired? With or without clear coating, I can't tell.

 

I agree with Greg that the hole was drilled later, probably to make it a lamp. Any value it might have had was significantly reduced with the drill out

Based on the three little blob feet (that always make me think of Hershey's Kisses ) I was searching Weller Pottery the other day.

Here are few of examples of Weller low bowls with the 3 blob feet. I've never seen them on tall vases, though.

The Weller Rosemont Line has a vase with a cockatoo on a hoop swing.

So, Weller did make at least one design featuring an exotic bird on a hoop swing. Maybe (I'm wildly speculating) yours could be an experimental Weller piece that was never put into production.

If you post measurements, maybe someone with Weller books can look for the shape.

Anyway, I think your vase is really interesting. Hoping the blob feet and vase shape might fire someone-elses synapses and ring some chimes, LOL.

To me, the painting/design style seems somewhere between Arts and Crafts era and Art Deco era.

 

Interesting theory. The vase is about 13" tall and weights almost 6 pounds.
