Pottery or Stoneware? Red Clay Bottle

Hi all,
Would this be considered pottery or stoneware? Chip on the edge shows red clay, inner rim so must have had a top of some sort, 8 1/2"H x 4" diameter. Maybe a milk bottle?
Any information appreciated.

Food storage?
Looks like the lid sat down about an inch.

At first I was thinking butter churn, but at 8 1/2" tall, I can't find anything that small in crockery. I can find glass butter churns that held a gallon, but not a crock.

 

thanks cluttered yes, the inner rim is about an inch down the neck. I thought maybe liquid as the shape reminds me of a milk bottle, but not finding any searching.

 

Its an old canning jar like the wax sealer type.
