Pottery with heavy pitted glaze

How is it done?
    Then the most difficult question - Can anybody read what's on the bottom. The top looks like some kind of cipher. The 2nd and 3rd lines appear to read "Handmade by ____". 4th line could be "Johnstone".
    5th line ??? Bottom line - my wife thinks it says "Canada" which would be appropriate since that's where we are but I think it could be almost anything starting with a "C"

    Yes, Algoma. Name looks like Johnstone. Logo up top -- GG?
