I bought this 20 years ago because the woven metalwork is similar to a fine Japanese ceramic bowl I was gonna inherit, and since have. That one is in storage , but I may have pics...if I find 'em, I'll post here.

The question is: what is this metal-wrapped ceramic process called, is it from a particular town or prefecture...and how long has it been practiced?

This vessel is 4 1/2" high, the mouth is 2 3/8", the foot is 2 5/8", and it weighs ~15 oz. The metal is probably nickel-plated brass; the vertical ribbons are 2.75mm wide; the finer horizontal ribbons are 1mm wide. All of it is extremely tight on the vessel.

    Thanks for lookin'!

I found 'em! This is a far superior bowl, but the ribbons are poorly plated, and show hazy verdigris up close...you may not notice it. There's a modern pen for scale in one of these...when (an' if) it gets located, I'll post dimensions & weight, etc. Enjoy!

I can find plenty of examples online, but no specific name for the technique, nor a specific locale. Like you, I think there must have been a local area, or a specific company that did these... and there must be a specific name.

Looks to me like Awaji encased with metal basket-weave - perhaps late Meiji...

That link provides lots of examples, but I don't know that Awaji can be taken as a definitive keyword. Searching Awaji ceramics shows a whole lot of stuff that does not involve this woven wire work, and I don't know that the technique is particular to this type of ceramic.

Awaji does show up frequently in connection with it, but is this because it is an Awaji related technique, or is it just a case of the internet feeding on itself?

Ver' valid query! That can easily be a vicious circle.
