What would be the purpose and possible origin of this interesting little pot? This reminds me of those red clay Bali pots. Or maybe a copy and smaller version of a water pot? (maybe Chinese?) Looks vintage to me. It is marked “XH” or maybe KH” The pot itself stands about 14cm (without handle) and is also 14cm across. Thank you for any comments

I think it's a beanpot lunchpot too, but a souvenir one. Yours looks never actually used.

Does anyone know if the weaving is Peruvian? ;)

This reminded me of that scene from the movie Airplane where Elaine is showing Tupperware to women in a 3rd world country.

Interesting. Thank you for the confirmation. Agreed,it does look to be in very good or unused condition. Will look into it maybe being Peruvian..

Ha ha. A real ‘classic’ comedy.. But a acquired taste.

I can't tell you for sure what the purpose is, but I can tell you that this is Sasak pottery, from Lombok, Indonesia.

Sasak potters from Lombok have been making distinctive pots that combine rattan stitching on rims, and sometimes handles, with the clay that fires red with black fireclouds, or all black, depending on the way it is fired.

There is now a book out, that covers Sasak pottery: Vessels of Life: Lombok Earthenware by Jean McKinnon. Sometimes the red pottery is made with etched designs, sometimes it is left with just the fireclouds for decoration.

Since it is pit-fired, and is not glazed, it isn't waterproof, so perhaps it is intended to be decorative, or the use is left to the discretion of the buyer.
