Good morning, my first time posting, thank you in advance for your advice! Have an interesting rug with animals, monkey? Phoenix? Lemur? A friend in the rug industry suggested that it is an older Persian one. Any thoughts? 1933F9B9-76AC-4B12-8E47-788F79E00788.jpeg 62305F37-94DA-46E5-B98A-058110416717.jpeg D26DD7F0-4B57-4430-B391-2C182537B207.jpeg 3F7F5909-69DE-4455-BEAF-DE130854F956.jpeg 29D1637D-3564-4923-9876-0603A9E204C3.jpeg

Nice, handknotted rug! Too bad about the edge wear - has your friend in the industry suggested stablization to keep that from getting worse? I see some animals but it's unclear what they might represent - other than some are birds.

I was skeptical at first but those figures definitely look like monkeys!

Good afternoon. What an amazing detective work! In the example that you sent they have a sword, while in my rug they are fishing? The ones in the center of my rug I can’t understand - they look like lemur type animal to me.

I will research qashkai rugs in detail - thank you again for pointing me possibly 8n the right direction. What I read so far makes sense as the family from whom I bought the rug was originally from Azerbaijan and moved to Iran. Maybe this is not green but turquoise color, but Azerbaijan is a muslin country so no green colors in rugs, correct?

I\ve heard that too but I'm not sure that it's true. I've had quite a few green rugs and one that is definitely a prayer rug - the one below. Quite a bit of green in it and it looks pretty muslim to me!

Maybe only certain sects don't use green or maybe it is just BS. If you find out the source of the statement, maybe you can let us know?

Good morning. On the green color: I read it in many places on the history of rugs, but will definitely look for a website to send as a reference. Further update on the rug. I contacted a specialist at Claremont Rugs. He told me that this rug is indeed an Azerbaijani rug 1925-50. He said that they have not seen such pattern before, but definitely of that region and time. So here is the answer! :)) the collection of animals on this rug is still absolutely fascinating!!! :))

As this rug was technically made in the Soviet Union Azerbaijan, religious restrictions were no longer in place! :) do they were free to use green color. I read that in those time traveling story tellers were very popular in those areas, and they famous for incredible stories they told, frequently about magical animals, including popular monkeys. I will research further, but it is possible this is a rug retelling one of those fairy tales! :))

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?
