Question about drop down bar clasp

I recently got this bracelet (mexican ) with a sort of clasp I wasn't previously familiar with- a key/bar attached to the safety chain that you drop into the loops of the closure. Maybe it's not that unusual, I've just personally never owned a bracelet like this! Anyways, my question is if there a to fasten it that I don't know about or does it look like there's a component missing? It's just that the bar just sits in the slot without fastening or clicking into place- for the most part it stays put but of course it slides out from time to time! (The safety chain prevents me from losing it, but still it's annoying!) Or is just how these clasps work and you have to deal with re-fastening it several times? I love the rustic look of the clasp, it's just impractical!

 

It is a pin clasp. That is how clasps were often made in the 18th century and earlier, and they are still used in ethnic jewellery.

It is supposed to stay in place, but if it doesn't, try bending the pin a tiny bit, so it becomes almost stuck in the tubes when closed.
Make sure you can still get it out though.

It might be hard to bend, it's a pretty dang sturdy pin, would you recommend doing it with pliers? Whatever I do, I want to tread very carefully! It does feel like it slides in and out too easily

if u can flatten the pin......just a tad.....it may make it harder to slide....

Could be......but you'd have to be oh so tender.......don't want to chance taking it wholly out of shape.......

 

yes that's the thing... I've gotten two good sugestions (either bending it ever so slightly or flattening it as you suggested) but I'm still just a tad apprehensive to attempt it. I will ponder it a bit more and whatever I do I will try to be very delicate

 

Instead of the pin, can the tube be ...um...stuffed a bit?

 

hmm maybe! what would you stuff it with? I don't want to put anything sticky up there but would think anything else would fall out.. tiny bit of tinfoil maybe?

 

Pliers leave marks if you're not used to using them on silver. I would just do it by hand. As they say in Dutch, just make yourself angry, meaning you apply more force if you're angry.

I'm not having much luck with my hands, maybe I will have to pull it out on a day that I'm feeling particularly enraged and see if I have better luck!
