    Hi all,
Why would there be a partial page in this book , it is in front of the contents page. Hasn't been done by an owner, I have found several of the same editions with this.
    Any information appreciated
    thanks for looking

Any chance there is an odd number of pages in the book? That might have been a way to bind an odd page (I'm guessing here LOL)

Hmmm, I'm thinking "outside the box" (book ;)) on this but . . . could it possibly be a slip of paper to be cut out of the book and used by the owner as a bookmark.

I also wonder if someone had written a (perhaps very) personal note to the "new" owner of the book which the owner or heirs wanted to save but not have in the book for all to see. ;)

If it shows up in multiple copies of the same book, I'd bet the publisher goofed and had something they needed to remove but it wasn't worth reprinting all the copies.

Or - it could have something to do with the binding process.

thanks for all the replies folks:) Ok, I've taken a closer look at it and added a couple of photos.
that is interesting INH, thanks for posting it!
The piece in mine isn't decorative, but maybe I'm reading it wrong (dainty and artistic, decorative binding), enfolds the first 6 pages. Maybe it is rolling paper, not as thin as I remember rolling paper to be but perhaps back then it wasn't as thin? You would have to rip the pages out to use them?
    Maybe I'm overthinking this, lol.

I took it to be the fluttering paper, but maybe I’m misunderstanding. Not sure about the thickness of rolling papers.

Maybe it has something to do with adding the 6 pages to the rest of the book? What's on those 6 pages?

yes, fluttering paper is a good description for rolling papers, similar to the see through paper in the photo below

I'd say it might have been a coupon that was cut out, but the cut looks so regular and neat I'm thinking probably not.

Yes, it is a very neat cut, I don't think it had anything there.

    JMHO.
when empty, often cut out with a razor and used for fake old letters typed on old typewriters with signatures of famous people.
