    Hi everyone!

Weird question: I was wondering if antique pickle dishes from the late 1800s to the early 1900s were meant to hold all types of pickled vegetables or was it for cucumber pickles? I figured one of you would know!

    Thanks!

My 94-year old mother and a collector of pressed glass said the same thing. That there was no law at the time dictating the contents of a pickle dish.;)

I've some much older ones: late 18th C. Those were usually pickled walnuts or other accompaniements. Not eggs, then, but things that went with cold meats and cheese. These are a bit damaged but I'm rather fond of them. Look at all the lovely molding (moulding;)) detail on OBB's!!

I was just thinking how beat up mine are too! The blue edged one is rather small and I've always hoped that no one was very hungry!

I really like them, yours too. I think at least one of mine is Caughley, but they were also made in London. Bow, for example.

When I buy glass, I always get relishes and pickle dishes really cheap because everyone believes they don't sell. I sold a bunch of them in my B&M space over the holidays. Had an entire area dedicated just to relishes. I'm so happy to see that many people use relishes and don't just drop the jars on the table. But I still can't get too many people interested in EAPG Celery vases for serving celery. It has such a nice look and the celery stays fresh and there's no cream cheese or peanut butter polluting the celery.

And the pottery relishes are genius with their handles. Makes it so much easier to serve without spilling. And yes, I would put anything in them that fit.

Do you know why so many vases are marked celery here? There's a fascincating reason.

Afer WW2, making decorative goods for the home market wasn't allowed. The way glass makers found to get round that was to emboss the word celery on the vase, which made it a food item!
