    Well... do you think a lighter may have sat in the metal cup on the lid?
    Or was that for ashes? Or was it for wooden matches, perhaps?

    What's its age? I'm guessing 50s-60s, but actually I'm clueless.

    Do you think anyone would actually use it ? Or was it just a novelty?

    I think its made in Japan but I don't know.

    I agree with komokwa, a lighter and made in Japan:)
