I have a coffee and tea silver service set from the very early 19th century. It has about 8 pieces on an enormous platter, all Sterling silver. Its Victorian, as is the buffet/sideboard it sits on. Maybe there is some mark on pieces to be able to identify maker, I don't know. None of the pieces are perfect. The largest piece, the coffee urn, I think it is called, has a little dent in it. The top finial is loose, and the ebony handle is loose. There is a place at the top of a leg where it appears that the Sterling has rubbed away, as it looks copper color---but it's not turning green there. So perhaps the set is not solid SS? One of the feet was bent due to kids dropping it. I used my Jewelers torch to bend it back, so it sits level again. The other pieces pretty much don't have attached parts, and are in good condition. My question is: who repairs antique pieces like this. The dent in the middle of the big coffee urn in particular would seem to be almost impossible to repair. I am interested in selling it. Is it worth more selling as a complete set? And how can I get an appraisal of it done? Like some on-line appraisal service that is reputable and really knows their stuff?
The last question is: it's a huge pain to periodically polish the set. Is it ok to spray the pieces with clear enamel spray paint?

Pictures would be nice. But if the "sterling" surface is wearing away, the item(s) are silver plated and not solid silver.

    Hi Jimi! Welcome!

We need pictures to have a better understanding of your set.'

If copper is showing, then it is not Sterling Silver.

Any marks on the base should be also be shown.

I would say no to the enamel spray, but others may have a different opinion.
